Belarus’ diplomats looking into detainment of Belarusian national in Nepal

MINSK, 19 September (BelTA) – Belarusian diplomats are keeping track of the situation with the detainment of the Belarusian national in Nepal. The information was released on the ONT TV channel, BelTA has learned.

A 25-year old resident of Zhodino has been in prison in Katmandu for four days already. The woman came to Nepal as a volunteer to take part in the construction of schools for local children and to teach English. In a video made from a hidden camera in the prison she complained of bad incarceration conditions.

The woman tried to leave for China on 14 September, but was detained in the airport. According to the preliminary information, she was arrested because her visa expired and she tried to forge the expiration date. She explained that she could not leave the country before the expiration date because the roads were washed out by heavy rains.

She will be detained until the situation is clarified. "The Embassy and the Honorary Consul of Belarus to Katmandu will keep in touch with the Nepalese authorities and will monitor the situation. It is expected that the decision on the Belarusian national will be made next week," Third Secretary for Consular Matters of the Belarusian Embassy in India Ivan Samsonov said.
