Archaeologists believe that in late 10th -early 11th centuries Gomel was one of the urban centers of the Radimichy tribe. By the beginning of the 13th century Gomel became a prominent political, commercial, cultural and trade center of the north-western part of the Chernigov lands. It is estimated that, at that time, the population of the town was more than 5,000 inhabitants and the total area was over 40 hectares. The Craftsmen in Ancient Gomel exhibition is dedicated to the 870th anniversary of the first mention of the city in written sources.
