Gomel ready to share its experience of reviving radiation-contaminated areas with Japan

GOMEL, 26 November (BelTA) - Gomel Oblast is ready to share its experience of reviving the radiation- contaminated areas with Fukushima and provide it with all necessary information, the chairman of the Gomel Oblast Executive committee Mr Vladimir Dvornik said as he met with the delegation from the city of Fukushima. According to the Governor, Belarus was very saddened to hear the news about the accident at Fukushima-1 in the spring of 2010. “We survived the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, and know better than anyone else what difficult road Fukushima will have to go to cope with the accident impact. We are ready to share our experience that we have accumulated over 26 years after the Chernobyl,” Vladimir Dvornik said. The delegation headed by Fukushima Mayor Takanori Seto includes about 30 people - representatives of local authorities and public organizations, scientists, journalists. “For us it is extremely important that this trip involves ordinary city residents who wanted to visit Belarus and personally make sure that it is possible to have a normal live after a nuclear accident," Mr Takanori Seto told journalists. “We understand that we are still at the beginning of the long way to revive our territories, and therefore any of your experience will be very useful,” he added. In particular, the Japanese delegation got interested in Belarus’ single databank that accumulates all official materials associated with the accident. In addition, the Japanese side is very interested in the food quality control system for the presence of radionuclides which operates in Belarus. The delegation of Fukushima visited the Gomel district and also Mozyr and Khoiniki districts. The Japanese visited the Institute of Radiology and a number of agricultural enterprises and talked with local residents and specialists.
