Monument to St Nicholas to be unveiled in Polotsk

VITEBSK, 19 August (BelTA) – A monument to St Nicholas the Wonderworker will be unveiled in Polotsk ahead of a visit of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill, BelTA learnt from chief specialist of the Polotsk town executive committee Stanislav Krassovski. The monument will be transported from Moscow to Polotsk in late August. Polotsk is currently busy with preparing the ground for the monument which will be erected not far from St Euphrosyne Convent, at a place of a destroyed tower. Stanislav Krassovski noted that the name of St Nicholas is of particular significance to an ancient Polotsk. St Nicholas is a patron of Fatherland and Hope. Polotsk in turn is a hero city. Polotsk gonfalons took part in the Battle of Kulikovo, the Battle of Grunwald, the War of 1812 and others. Besides, the day of commemoration of St Nicholas, on 19 August, is a holiday of the Polotsk military school, one of the oldest military educational institutions of the country. Patriarch Kirill plans to visit Belarus on 25-28 September. The Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church is set to visit the Minsk, Polotsk and Vitebsk eparchies, meet the clergy and community of Belarus, hold church services.
