Agricultural companies of Gomel oblast launch onion harvesting campaign
The agricultural companies of Gomel oblast launched an onion harvesting campaign, BelTA was told by deputy director general of the Gomel oblast fruits and vegetables association Liudmila Vabischevich.
All 49 companies united by the oblast association and specialized in onion growing buckled down to the work. As of September 13, they harvested about 400 hectares or 29% of the area under onion; the gross onion yield exceeded 9.1 thousand tonnes.
The oblast average yield exceeds 225 centners per hectare. This index is two times and even higher in some agricultural companies. For example, Brilevo Co. from the Gomel region harvested 1 thousand 450 tonnes of onion while the yield was 483 centners per hectare; Teplichny Co. from the same region – 1 thousand 70 tonnes while the yield was 501 centners per hectare.
At present the agricultural companies sell onion to the population in all big settlements of the oblast as well as in Mogilev and Minsk oblasts. Besides, the list of wholesale customers has already been compiled.
This year Gomel oblast is expected to harvest at least 25 thousand tonnes of onion while the country needs 40 thousand. Specialists have no doubt the target will be met. However, they cannot say if agricultural companies beat the harvest projections as much will depend on weather conditions.
