Gomel customs house to launch electronic declarations by late 2007

In Q4 2007 Gomel customs house plans to introduce electronic declarations. Gomel customs house chief Vasiliy Gnatyuk told BelTA, the installation and tuning of the new system is under way. The electronic declarations system provides for a computer-based workflow for all customs clearance procedures. The novelty will decrease the customs clearance term by several times. At present such a procedure can take 24 hours, with the deadline set at 240 hours. With the electronic declarations system up and running, the procedure will take 2 hours. To make it possible, a corporate computer network is being deployed in the customs house to unite all companies and organisations, which perform foreign trade operations. Around 500 modern computers have been bought, the construction of communication lines is in progress. Vasiliy Gnatyuk added, foreign traders of the oblast will have to carry out the same operations. Today there are 2,500 companies performing export-import operations, with some 700 of the companies being major traders. According to the source, in Q4 2007 they plan to accomplish most of the work necessary for launching the electronic declarations system and intend to start providing the new service to economic agents.
