Gomel oblast, Siauliai county sign cooperation agreement

The Gomel Oblast Executive Committee and the Administration of the Siauliai County (Lithuania) have signed a cooperation agreement. The document was inked in the city upon Sozh as part of a two-day visit of a Lithuanian delegation to the Gomel oblast. The delegation led by Siauliai County Governor Alvydas Sedzius includes heads of Lithuanian private companies. Alvydas Sedzius told BelTA, the agreement will enable the two administrative units to closely cooperate in trade, science and research as well as cultural sphere. In particular, Lithuanian businessmen plan to set up new companies in the free economic zone Gomel-Raton. Besides, the close cooperation of the Siauliai county with Byelorussian Steel Works will continue. According to the source, local TV companies plan to share broadcasts. “People in the two regions would be interested in learning about the culture and achievements of their neighbours. We have a lot in common with the Gomel oblast. Siauliai is an industrial rapidly developing city, too”, added Alvydas Sedzius. The Siauliai county administration has already signed similar cooperation agreements with various oblasts of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and the USA. Cooperation with Belarus began with the Gomel oblast. According to Alvydas Sedzius, there are plans to sign an agreement on cooperation with the Grodno oblast. “They are our old and good partners. We are interested in cooperation with them”, said the source. As part of the two-day stay in the Gomel oblast the Lithuanian delegation plans to visit Byelorussian Steel Works, participate in opening the expo Spring 2007 in Gomel, to visit the Equestrian Sport Olympic Reserve Centre and a specialised children and youth team sports school. The delegation has already been to FEZ Gomel-Raton and the National Research Centre for Radioactive Medicine and Human Ecology.
