The Gomel oblast sowed 225 thousand hectares of spring fields, 70% of the plan, BelTA learnt from Mikhail Kolesnikov, the head of the plant cultivation intensification department of the Gomel oblast executive committee.
It has been earlier informed that the regional agricultural companies were first to complete the early crop sowing in the country and today the major sowing campaign is in the potato and corn fields.
As for early May 2, the oblast sowed seven thousand hectares of potato fields, 59% of the plan and 42% of the corn sowing area. Potato will occupy 170 thousand hectares, 50 thousand hectares more than in 2007. Besides, the sowing area for corn will expand 2.5 times.
According to Mikhail Kolesnikov, the last two weeks were difficult for the Gomel oblast because of bad weather. Frequent rains made the sowed area grew only 2-3% a day.
