Gomel oblast takes measures to reduce wild boars livestock in exclusion zone

Gomel oblast is taking measures to reduce wild boars livestock in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. According to the information given to BelTA by head of the oblast committee for natural resources and environmental protection Oleg Akushko, this year the flock of wild boars inhabiting Gomel woods exceeded the admissible level by 9 per cent. There are more than 10,000 of them. The staggering growth is recorded in the contaminated regions where the shooting is not that common. According to Oleg Akushko, this causes a lot of problems to agricultural companies nearing the exclusion zone as well as Polessye State Radiation Ecological Reserve. This year dozens of thousands of hectares have been damaged by the wild animals. The situation fueled development of a set of measures to tackle the problem. One of them is creation of hunting teams to shoot off wild boars. The teams will operate each weekend of June. According to Oleg Akushko this will help to normalize the situation.
