Gomel oblast to hold 20 festive events to celebrate 70th anniversary

The Gomel oblast will hold more than 20 festive events to celebrate the 70th anniversary of its founding, BelTA learned from the press service of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee. The main events will be held on January 18. The programme includes a solemn meeting and a gala concert featuring Belarus’ best artistic groups. An inaugurating ceremony of an aqua-park in Zhlobin, the first one in the region, is scheduled for January 18 as well. In 2008, the Gomel oblast will host different events, contests and exhibitions. Among them is the students’ action “70 Good Deeds for the 70th Anniversary of the Oblast”, a contest of children’s drawings “Friendship Without Borders”, “Best Family of the Gomel Oblast”, “World by the Eyes of Young Technicians of the 21st century”. An exposition devoted to the anniversary will open in the Gomel palace in January. An avenue in the downtown will be named in honour of the 10th anniversary of the oblast. Officially the Gomel oblast was established on January 15, 1938, when the USSR Supreme Soviet adopted a resolution “On amendments and additions to the USSR Constitution articles on administrative division in the BSSR”. In accordance with the resolution, two oblasts (Gomel and Polessye) were established on the territory of the modern-day Gomel oblast which were reunited into one in 1954.
