GOMEL, 25 April (BelTA) – Italian athletes will take part in an international summer biathlon tournament which is due in Gomel on 25-26 April, the sports and tourism department of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee told BelTA following the meeting with representatives of the Italian association Focolaccia and the sport center Libertas.
The tournament will feature youth teams from Italy, Gomel and Vitebsk oblasts of Belarus. Last year the team of Gomel Oblast participated in the similar competitions in Italy’s Tuscany where it took the second and third places.
According to Focolaccia President Mauro Guidotti, mutual sports visits became possible after a memorandum of understanding was signed between Gomel Oblast Executive Committee and Italy’s sports center Libertas. The document envisages bilateral cooperation in physical education and sports.
According to Mauro Guidotti, the association cooperates with many European countries, takes part in various tournaments in Europe. The Focolaccia President emphasized the cooperation with Belarus as special one, pointing out Chernobyl projects. Italy’s recuperation programs for Belarusian children from the Chernobyl regions have made closer many families and civil organizations of the two countries. These programs became a basis for developing contacts in other areas.
At the meeting the parties discussed in detail the program of the forthcoming sport visit. The Italian team is expected to be taken on a tour of the Gomel Palace and Park Ensemble, museums and the sports center in Zhlobin. Further cooperation was also considered during the meeting. Gomel athletes were invited to partake in the swimming competitions that are due in one of the Italian regions next winter.
