Japan awards grant to rehabilitation center in Belarus

GOMEL, 14 November (BelTA) – The ceremony to sign a contract to give a grant to the rehabilitation and recuperation center Sidelniki, Mozyr District, took place at the education department of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee on 13 November. The grant was awarded in line with the Japanese government's program on humanitarian security, BelTA has learned.

According to Japanese Ambassador to Belarus Mimori Shigehiro, the $90,000 grant will be allocated to purchase medical equipment for children. "We are happy that we will be able to help improve the health of the children living in the area affected by the Chernobyl disaster," the diplomat said.

The money will be used to buy balneology bathtubs, tubs for underwater and 'dry' massage, inhalation devices, and other equipment. This will allow increasing the number of medical services offered to children at the rehabilitation center.

Some 32 projects have been implemented in Belarus in line with Japan's humanitarian security program since 2004. All the previous projects were run in cooperation with Belarusian healthcare facilities.

The children's rehabilitation and recuperation center Sidelniki was opened in 1996. Every year the center provides treatment to about 500 schoolchildren from Gomel Oblast.
