Monument to legendary clown Karandash to open in Gomel June 1

A monument to legendary clown Karandash (pencil) will be unveiled in Gomel on June 1. The city’s chief architect Sergei Plotko told BelTA, the sculpture group “Clown” will be placed in the square the Gomel State Circus is situated in. According to the source, the monument was inspired by the life of Soviet Union People’s Artist Mikhail Rumyantsev aka clown Karandash. It was no accidental choice. Rumyantsev often visited Gomel while touring and was very much fond of the city upon Sozh, which is testified by his letters. An excerpt from one of such letters with thanks to the city and the residents will find its place in the monument. The sculpture is being designed by well-known Gomel sculptor Vyacheslav Dolgov. The legendary Karandash will appear before the public in his clown costume, a bowler and with his unfailing dog Klyaksa (blot). The sculpture will be made life-sized – 1 metres 57 centimetres. According to the chief architect, the design was agreed with daughters of the artist, who live in Moscow. Sergei Plotko added, the ensemble will be placed on a low pedestal and will be surrounded by pavement with light-emitting diodes, which will shine at night. Such sculpture will be the first of the kind in the city.
