Requiem for fascist death camp victims held in Gomel
A meeting-requiem devoted to the international day of liberation of fascist concentration camp victims was held in Gomel. The event, which took at the fascism victims monument in Vosstaniya Square, gathered former death camp prisoners, Great Patriotic War veterans, representatives of public and youth organisations.
Chairperson of the regional branch of the public association "Belarusian association of former underage fascism prisoners" Nikolai Gonchar told BelTA, during the German occupation tens of thousands of women and children were engaged in forced labour. Over one hundred thousand people were tormented to death in the POW camp in Gomel, several tens of thousands – in Ozarichi death camp, today there are over 12,000 former prisoners in Gomel region.
According to Nikolai Gonchar, his association mainly specialises in assistance to former prisoners and Great Patriotic War veterans. Many of them get special vehicles, sanatorium tickets, better living conditions, money aid and have phone installed. The regional commission of the Belarusian national fund "Understanding and Reconciliation", the city organisation "Children of War" as well as local authorities contribute a lot.
