Session of International Coordination Committee on Chernobyl to be held in Gomel on July 5

A session of the International Coordination Committee on Chernobyl will be held in Gomel on July 5. The session is organized by the Belarusian Red Cross Society (BRCS), Gomel oblast mission of the Red Cross Society, republican scientific and practical center of radiation medicine and human ecology. Attending the session will be the head of the delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies for Belarus and Ukraine, heads of Red Cross Societies of Belarus, Russia and Ukraine, BelTA learnt in BRCS. The session will focus on negative consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe, rendering assistance to people affected by the catastrophe, attraction of donors. BRCS secretary general Viktor Kolbanov will speak about the incidence of diseases in Belarus (for example thyroid pathologies). The participants are set to develop a common strategy to obtain funds for social programmes in the affected regions. A report on the activity of mobile diagnostic labs of the Belarusian Red Cross in 2006 and in H1 2007 will be delivered. The participants of the session will discuss the financing of the Chernobyl programme, the activity of the national Red Cross Societies in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine to increase the financing of the Chernobyl programme from local sources. The session will focus on the possibility to prolong the programme once the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies withdraws from the programme at the end of 2008.
