Weather accelerates harvesting pace in Gomel Oblast

GOMEL, 19 July (BelTA) – In the next few days harvesting pace will be accelerated in the Gomel Oblast, BelTA learned from Valentin Babok, Chairman of the Agriculture and Food Committee of the Gomel Oblast Executive Committee. In his words, the abnormally hot weather makes grain rapidly lose its water content. At present the water content is as low as 8-10% in some areas. The weather can “scorch” the crops. In order to avoid losses, the Gomel Oblast administration focuses on speed and quality harvesting. In the next few days the oblast plans to accelerate the daily harvesting pace up to 6% (5% of the total area at present). Valentin Babok said that they plan to gather in the bulk of the crops till the end of the month. As of 19 July the Gomel Oblast processed 23% of the crops, with the average yield at 30.3 centners per hectare. 240,300 tonnes of grain has been collected. The leading producers are the Rechitsa, Zhlobin, and Loyev regions.
