Alexander Lukashenko: mass media must not poison relations between nations

MINSK, 24 November (BelTA) – Mass media must not poison relations between nations. The Belarusian head of state made the relevant statement as he met with participants at the X session of the CIS Council of heads of state news agencies on 24 November. The President believes that mass media should objectively and truthfully cover what is going on inside a country as well as relations between nations. He believes that by distorting information, mass media mislead common citizens. In particular, talking about mass media coverage of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the President remarked: “We have done a lot in the Union State, especially for people. Yes, expectations were high. But when they start ‘pecking’ at us on all channels in Russia, it offends people. Our people see things the way they are and the way they are represented by the brotherly Russia. People understand whether we are needed and the interest falls. It cannot happen”. Alexander Lukashenko remarked that Russia should unite, should be the key linking part. “The Customs Union is the first sprout. Once Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia, and Ukraine wanted to create a common economic space. It would have been a most powerful node. I am convinced that others would have joined. We would have the Soviet Union in the economy in a good sense and would have built relations,” said the head of state.
