Belarus, Russia draft Union State program “NPP waste”

MINSK, 22 December (BelTA) – Scientists from Belarus and Russia have drafted the Union State program “NPP waste”, First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Piotr Vityaz told reporters on 22 December, BelTA has learnt. The new program will set forth nuclear waste treatment and management technologies to be used in Belarus and Russia. Deputy Academician Secretary of the Physical and Technical Sciences Department of the National Academy of Sciences Alexander Mikhalevich informed that the new program envisages the development of technologies to treat liquid radioactive waste emerging during equipment recovery at nuclear power plants. Specialists traditionally use liquid radioactive waste evaporation technology, but the process is energy-intensive and costly. The Energy and Nuclear Research Institute Sosny came up with new methods to remove radioactive elements from liquid waste using precipitation. At present the new draft program is being studied by parties concerned. The program is expected to identify optimal waste treatment technologies and create the relevant legal framework.
