Belarus wins six medals in Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad

Belarusian schoolchildren won six medals at the 42nd International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad. Headmaster of the Belarusian State University Lyceum Tatiana Kolevich told BelTA that the pupils of the lyceum won three medals. They are Pavel Choulkin (golden medal), Hleb Gorbatsevich (silver medal) and Anna Sivopliasova (bronze medal). Valeria Kasnerik and Dmitry Doinikov from Minsk school #22 also won a golden and a silver medal respectively. Andrei Kononov, a pupil of the school #51, was awarded a silver medal. “Chemistry studies have traditionally been on a very high level in Belarus and Belarusian pupils have a history of successful performance at chemistry competitions”, Tatiana Kolevich said. The winners of the national qualification competition were shortlisted to take part in the International Mendeleev Olympiad. The participants of the Olympiad were given five hours to accomplish ten tasks from different fields of chemistry: organic, inorganic, analytical, etc. Taking part in the olympiad were schoolchildren from Belarus, Russia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Latvia, Estonia, Romania and Bulgaria.The Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad is held every year. The prize winners of this Olympiad are accepted to the Moscow State University without entrance examinations. Apart from that, such a competition is a powerful instrument of creating a common space for chemistry studies within the CIS.
