Latushko: Gomel leaves imprint on Belarusian culture

MINSK, 24 January (BelTA) – Gomel has left an imprint on the history of Belarusian culture, Culture Minister of Belarus Pavel Latushko said on 23 January at a solemn ceremony of presenting the 2011 cultural capital of Belarus and the CIS in Minsk, BelTA has learnt. According to Pavel Latushko, Gomel together with other cities leads the efforts to support and promote the national culture. Thanks to the projects like “Belarus’ Cultural Capital” and “CIS Cultural Capital”, the Belarusians got an opportunity to enjoy professional and amateur art. “I would like all the cities bearing the status of a cultural capital at different times to remain the center of culture forever,” the minister said. Gomel Mayor Viktor Pilipets noted that in 2011 Gomel became the center stage of over 220 events. “What matters most is that the honorable title helped inspire many people to preserve and promote the national culture, gave an impetus to new original projects and ideas,” he said. Nesvizh became Belarus’ Cultural Capital in 2012. Chairman of the Nesvizh District Executive Committee Ivan Krupko noted that he realizes the responsibility the town will assume and assured that the local authorities will do their best to make Nesvizh serve the cultural inspiration not only for local residents, but also for all Belarusians who visit this ancient town.
