Preparations to mark Belarus' liberation in WWII completed, Sidorsky says

MINSK, 2 December (BelTA) – Preparations for the 65th anniversary of Belarus' liberation in WWII have been completed, Prime Minister of Belarus Sergei Sidorsky said at the third session of the national organizational committee handling the preparation for the events to mark the 65th anniversary of Belarus’ liberation from the Nazis and Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. The session was held in the House of Government and was chaired by Prime Minister Sergei Sidorsky and head of the Presidential Administration Vladimir Makei. “We have recently seen the attempts to revise the results of WWII,” Sergei Sidorsky said. “We have seen the holy symbols slandered and murders and executors rehabilitated. There have been attempts to diminish the role of the Soviet soldiers in defeating the Nazism. The Soviet Union bore the main burden of the most terrible war. The Belarusian people made an invaluable contribution: our land became the defensive line. Some 1.5 million Belarusians were in the Red Army, hundreds of thousands of civilians fought against the enemy on the occupied territory,” Sergei Sidorsky said. The Prime Minister underlined that the best demonstration of our appreciation for the generation of winners is taking care of veterans every day. The participants of the session studied the preparation for the events to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. They also discussed ways to improve social and living conditions of war veterans, people who worked in the home front and families of the military who were killed during the war. The participants of the session discussed the list of towns and settlements that will be awarded the pennant “For Courage and Fortitude in the Great Patriotic War”. This pennant was presented to 22 settlements of Belarus in 2009. “We should carry on with the search and identification of people who were killed in action and pay final respects to them. The celebration of anniversaries should become an important instrument of the patriotic upbringing of the worthy successors of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War,” Sergei Sidorsky said. The participants of the session were informed about the presentation of the anniversary medal “65 Years of Liberation of the Republic of Belarus from the Nazis” to the war veterans who took part in the liberation of Belarus from the Nazi invaders now living abroad.
