World community observes International Children’s Day

MINSK, 1 June (BelTA) – International Children’s Day is marked today worldwide. This day is designed to remind the community of the importance to observe and respect children’s rights. International Children’s Day was established in 1949 following the decision of the Women International Democratic Federation. 40 years later representatives of 59 countries including the USSR met in New York to sign the Convention on the Rights of the Child that proved that children due to their vulnerability need special care and protection. The document confirms the necessity of legal and other protection of the child before and after his birth. In Belarus child welfare, protection of children’s rights and interests are among the priorities of the state’s policy. The National Commission on the Rights of the Child has been set up in Belarus to control the observance of the rights and legal interests of children. One of Belarus’ government priorities is to improve access to high quality education at all levels. Belarus was the first on the globe to accept the Education Code which is aimed at a comprehensive and system regulation of social relations in the area. Belarus has made a lot to create necessary conditions for exercising the rights of the children and their upbringing in the family. The country has developed an integrated social protection system for families with children. With the help of the UNICEF, Belarusian healthcare organizations have opened centers to provide psychological and medical assistance to young people including in crisis situations.
